MILITARY AWARD
SERGEANT TITHER’S CAREER Sergeant Michael Cameron Tither, who has been awarded the Military Medal, is the youngest son of Mr and Mrs P. Tither, of Riversdale. Born at Riversdale 29 years ago, Sergeant Tither received his primary education at the Riversdale School. He later attended the Gore High School, where he passed the matriculation examination. After being employed by the Forestry Department for a period, he entered the University of Otago, where he gained the B.A. and M.A. degrees and his diploma of education. He taught in various schools in the Otago Education Board's district, and then obtained an appointment at the Makarora School, where he taught for two years. He enlisted from there in 1940 and went overseas with the Fifth Reinforcements.
Sergeant Tither was married before going overseas, and his wife, who lives in Dunedin, is a member of the staff of the Otago Girls’ High School. Sergeant Tither took an active part in all kinds of sport, and while at the university he participated in football and boxing, playing a prominent part in the competitions between Otago and Canterbury. He was wounded in action during the summer campaign in Libya.
