SOLDIERS’ PROBLEMS

MEN* OF 2nd N.Z.E.F,

Problems with which soldiers are likely to be faced on their return to New Zealand were fully explained by members of the executive of the Returned Services’ Association last night, when they met some 70 men of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. in the R.S.A. Hall. The president, Mr S. G. Secular, who was in the chair, outlined the functions and activities of the association. He said it might be found necessary to enlarge the present Soldiers’ Club. Land settlement problems were discussed by Mr W. K. Cameron, who referred to questions of selection, tenure, and finance. The Rehabilitation Council had agreed, he said, to the formation of local committees, the duty of which would be to advise concerning applications for land, the prices that should be paid, the type of farming to be carried on, and the selection of live stock. Every returned man who desired to go on the land was eligible for settlement so long as he was fit. _ Mr S. B. Smith spoke on the activities of the Disabled Servicemen’s Reestablishment League, housing questions were dealt with by Mr W. E. Earnshaw. and Mr O. L. Ferens discussed pensions matters. The work of . the Executive Committee was detailed by Mr H. P. Jefcoate, a member of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. The meeting approved of a proposal to co-operate with the association in conducting a social function, and repre- . sentatives 'of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. were appointed to a sub-committee.
