REFUGEES FROM BURMA

EVACUATION TO INDIA

RUGBY, June 16. The Secretary of State for India, Mr L. S. Amery, stated in the House of Commons that it was estimated that 400,000 persons had been evacuated from Burma to India. The great majority were Indians. They reached India by sea, air, and land. The evacuation was being continued by land routes which had so far been used by 125,000 people. It was believed, Mr Amery added, that there were still considerable numbers trying to make their way on the main route to India by the Chindwin Valley and also on more difficult routes further north. The authorities in India were taking comprehensive and vigorous steps to assist those still on the way, but the problem had become increasingly difficult owing to the deterioration in the state of the tracks and the flooding of rivers. British planes had dropped supplies of food and medicine along the route for the assistance of refugees.
