RACING NEWS By Sentinel

Mrs W. D. Graham, of Auckland, has purchased Penny Whistle. Cherokee had a 71b allowance, and carried 7.6 In the Ashburton Handicap.

The leading rider, W. J. Broughton, will shortly be called up to don khaki. The rain which fell over the week-end is reported to have improved the going at Oamaru.

The South Canterbury Jockey Club has made a donation of £IOO >to the Patriotic Funds.

The Raker got badly away In the Ashburton Handicap, and in the circumstances did well to finish second. The fate of the Great Northern St. Leger will be governed by the number of days allotted to the Wellington Racing Club next season. The Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting, to be held on Saturday, marks the second last day of the flat racing season in the South Island.

Some good track work put up at Riccarton prior to the Ashburton meeting was to a great extent nullified by rain making the going soft for the racing. Northern King, who ran second to Little Secret at Ashburton, is a four-year-old gelding by Valkyrian—Happy Queen, by Gay Lad—Coronata, by Malster.

Beau Ceil finished last at Ashburton, and his form is in marked contrast to that of last season. He is obviously not in a racing mood at present. Streamline, who suffered an unlucky defeat in the Great Northern Hurdles last year, has been sent up from 11.5 to 11.10, and for winning the Great Northern Steeplechase has been raised from 10.10 to 11.10.

Little Secret, the winner of the Trial Stakes at Ashburton, is a three-year-old colt by Man’s Pal. It was his fourth start this season. In his previous start Little Secret was second to Stylosa in the Courtenay Handicap. Irish Lass scored her first success in 11 starts this season when she won at Ashburton. She is a five-year-old mare by Irish Lancer from Assemble, the dam of Overhaul. Master Anomaly, and Dismantle,

Palfrey and Eulogist cannot act up to their best in soft going, although the former won at the Ashburton spring meeting under bad track conditions. Both horses stopped to a walk in the Waikouaiti Cup, which was run in bad going. No doubt owing to the state of the going, favourites had a bad run at Ashburton, but nevertheless a substantial increase was registered in the turnover on the totalisator. Apparently the punters gather up “ ammunition ” by the curtailment of racing. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel Burt Scott included in his work last week a mile at a 2min 13sec gait, with the final half-mile in Imin 5 2-ssec. Battlevale shaped pleasingly last week in a work-out over a mile and a-half with Jimmy Drusus and Gold Bank. Lady Scott is reported to be looking in good shape at present and ready to put up a good performance. Chuckles cleared out from the field ui her division of the Selma Trot, and won so well that further success should come her way. Over 60 light-harness horses are in regular work at Addington. A number of horses are also in work at New Brighton and on private tracks. R. B. Berry started Lucky Gem and Airspeed at Ashburton, and their experience may help their chances in the Oamaru Juvenile Trotting Stakes. Most of the limit horses in the Rakala Trot had their chances spoilt by Hoyden cutting right across the track and disorganising the field. Technique, who won a division at Ashburton, is a rising five-year-old gelding by. Jack Potts—Rose Logan, by Logan Pointer—Rosalie, by Wildwood. In Australia Our Globe is considered about equal in racing merit to his brother Springfield Globe. At Launceston recently Our Globe put up a placed performance of 3min 14 l-ssec. In a work-out last week over a mile and a-half at Addington, Ronald Logan, Donald Dhu, and Busted Flush travelled in company and finished in close order when concluding the final half-mile in Imin 3sec.
