TROTTING NOTES
By Sentinel At a meeting held at Ascot (Melbourne) on April 18 the takes ranged from £25 to £75. Hope for the future of trotting in Australia appears to be expressed In the payment of £3OO for a yearling fillv by Raider, from Roselawh, the dam of Lawn Derby, lmin 59 2-ssec, and Van Derby, 2min 0 2-ssec. Although the Australian trotter White Globe has not been raced in New Zealand there is a probability of her making an appearance at the August meeting at Addington: Apparently White Globe is taking some time to become acclimatised. The Victorian. Trotting and Racing Association has suspended automatic handicapping during the duration of the war. It is interesting to read an opinion expressed in the Australian Trotting Record that " the automatic handicap rule has been responsible for hastening trotting interest-to its present stage." There has always been some objection to the early racing of two-year-olds, but it naturally diminishes as the season advances. There is the type ■of youngster who by breeding and conformation, can be raced without detriment to subsequent possibilities if not overtaxed. At this stage of the season rising three-year-olds should be fairly well advanced in condition to race and winners of the Sapling Stakes in Ahuriri, Parisienne and others went on to continued success, but a too-fre-quent exploitation of early speed generally has disastrous results. At present 16 attractively-bred two-year-olds remain in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes, of £SOO. to be decided on Saturday next, and the appearance of the youngsters and the result of the race will attract widespread interest.
