WAR AGAINST U-BOATS

ALLIES USING “Q ” SHIPS (Rec. 9.15 p.m.) LONDON. May 8. The first mention of the Allied use of “ Q ” ships for the purpose of combating U-boats was made by a U-boat commander in a broadcast description of his vessel’s escape. The commander said he sighted a. small steamer off the American coast. She looked so innocent that he did not think it worth launching a torpedo, for which reason he surfaced to use his guns. “ When we approached,” the commander said, “ we were greeted with a hail of fire from heavy guns and from machine-guns hidden by artificial sides and other objects aboard the steamer. Depth charges fell too close to be comfortable. The freighter’s manoeuvring was so clever that we were caught unawares. We, by a miracle, were able to crash-dive and escape.”
