OTAGO’S EFFORT

WAR PRODUCTION DISPLAY EXHIBIT AT WINTER SHOW One exhibit which should command the attention of every visitor to the Winter Show, which will be opened on May 29, will be a display of war production arranged by the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association. This will be the first opportunity the public will have of acquiring a full appreciation of the vital part that Otago manufacturing industries are playing in New Zealand’s war effort.

On the stand, which will cover more than 1700 square feet, will be arranged articles of every description which are being made in Otago for war purposes. The list ranges from trench-mortars to soap, and gives some indication of the multifarious needs of the modern war machine. The public will see complete sets of uniforms, boot machines turning out military footwear, aerial practice-bombs, three and four-inch trench-mortars, trenchmortar bomb cases, ammunition carriers, parts of the Universal carrier (the Australian adaptation of the Bren cardier), rifle grenade dischargers and munition gauges, canned fooid. canned beer, E.P.S. equipment are other items which will be included in the display. The “ Waste Paper Brigade ” hopes to display articles made from waste paper.

The association is arranging an attractive lay-out for the stand which will be surmounted by a large V sign. At each end will be representations of factories, their tall smokestacks symbolising the “big guns of the hotne front.” Films depicting war industry at work will also be shown. Some of the exhibits will not, at first sight, appear to be of great importance. For instance, the significance of a plain, band of polished steel will not be readily appreciated. Men and women, however, are working day and night turning out thousands of these bands, each being fitted- into a shell, thousands of which are being made for the guns which our soldiers are manning.
