MAORIS IN VANGUARD
ALLIES' FIGHTING FORCES (P.A.) WHANGAREI, Apl. 20. A declaration by the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, that Maori troops would be among the first to occupy Tokio caused a spontaneous demonstration at a tribal gathering at Whirinaki yesterday, when 2000 honoured the memory of Captain Harding Leaf, the Ngapuhi chieftain, who died leading his men in, Crete. The assembled people rose as one body and, led by Sir Apirana Ngata, performed the traditional war haka, " Kamate, Kamale." Sir Apirana said the Maoris would gladly fill a third Maori battalion if needed, and were prepared to make any. sacrifice to win.
