OBITUARY
MR JOHN MITCHELL
The death occurred at Invercargill on Thursday of Mr John Mitchell, a wellknown resident of South Invercargill, at the age of 77 years. Mr Mitchell was born at St. Ives, Cornwall. He came out to New Zealand on the Waitara, arriving at Bluff on December 5, 1878. He took a great interest in local body affairs for many years, and was Mayor of South Invercargill for five years and a member of the Borough Council for seven years. For 30 years he worked for Messrs William Todd and Co., Ltd. He was a member of the Invercargill Garrison Band for 30 years and he went with the band to contests at Melbourne, Masterton and Christchurch. He was also a member of the band when it won the championship at the Christchurch contest in 1893. On July 20, 1940, Mr and Mrs Mitchell celebrated their golden wedding. They had nine children, but only four are living. They are Mrs L. Wildermoth and Mrs H. Lindsay (Invercargill),' Mr S. G. Mitchell (Bluff) and Mr J. Mitchell (Dunedin). a :"».'
