WIVES LEAVE WORK
DEPENDENCE ON HUSBANDS EFFECT ON MILITARY CALL-UP (Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, Feb." 7. " Five hundred thousand wives in the United States recently left their jobs, most- of them obviously aiming at becoming financially dependent, thereby exempting their husbands from the call-up," said the Director of Selective. Service, Brigadier-general Hershey. to-day. He added that many recent' marriages had been for the same purpose. The draft boards would carefully check individual cases for intentional evasion of military service, but men engaged in vital war production would still be reserved.
General Hershey said that the United States Army would total 4,000.000 men by. the end of the year, while 15,000,000 workers would be engaged in war production,, compared with 5,000,000 now.
