RACING REVIEWED

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 7. The Canterbury Jockey Club had a good crowd at Motukarara for Its summer meeting, and there was some capital racing. Phenomenal soon took the lead in the High-weight Handicap, with Warfleld, Blue Abbey and Gay Thread next into the straight. Dinah Dhu then shot through and stalled off Gay Thread by a length. Arctic Dawn; which disappointed, came fast from the entrance of the straight for a close third. Rue, Blue Abbey and Richelieu Pearl were next. Divisions were necessary in the Trial Stakes, jln the first, Red Ace, Miss Saone and Alert showed the way with Hughsotis moving up at the home turn. Once in the straight, Hughsotis made a solid run and beat Miss Saone in the last few strides with Alert close up. Portadown was slow away, but came home strongly in fourth place. In the second division, Hinepo soon headed True Mate, with Prince Shad and Rhodlim handy. True Mate joined Hinepo at the entrance the straight, but ran off the course, leaving Prince Shad to run through for an easy win. Court Dress was slow in the early stages, but came home fast to beat the tiring Hinepo for second place. Bold Sheila and Rhodlim were next. Miss Clorane led Egyptian Rose and Straight Bat in the early part of the Middle Park Plate. Straight Bat took charge at the entrance to the straight, but Egyptian Rose wore her down and won by a length. Cross Question was slow to get going, but made up ground in the straight and beat Miss Clorane to be a moderate third. The decisive win of Egyptian Rose did not argue well for the class of the local two-year-olds.

The Midsummer\Handicap was marred by the lack of pace.pver the early stages. The field went off slowly, and Cymric led out of the straight from Wild Fox, who pulled her way to the front after going a little over three furlongs. Palfrey, Cymric and Eulogist followed her to the home ,turn, where Cymric retired. Palfrey headed Wild Fox a furlong from the post and won by half a length. Eulogist was two lengths away, with Gladynev and The Rskcr next The Halswell Handicap was a good; race to the straight, but only three horses took part in the finish. Lunaria led Muffler and Good .Scout for most of the way; with Sally Lunn gradually moving i up to fourth place, with Sir Gundi next. Lunaria retired at the entrance to the straight and Sally Lunn wore Muffler down and won easily, with Good Scout a length away, and a long gap to Sir Gundi and Lunaria. The winner is on the way to good staying form. Palpitate, Warrigal, and,Night Lancer got off badly in the Lyttelton Plate. Lord Advocate, King Herod, and Wedding Ring led to the straight, where Wedding Ring retired. Winning Flight then moved up and took the lead a furlong from the post; but Lord Advocate wore, her down and won by a head. King Herod faded to finish four lengths back. Junior was a poor fourth. The Craven Plate provided a great race, with half a dozen horses in a bunch at the finish. Don't Forget was first out with Not Out, Doria, and Stabilise heading the others at the end of a furlong, where Hearth met trouble and dropped back to* nearly last. Not Out lost his place after three furlongs, and Don't Forget and Stabilise were beaten at the entrance to the straight, where Doria took charge. She tired in the run home, but hung on to win from Hearth, who was unlucky, but finished with a great run. Leighnor, Green Gables, Not Out, and Rawhamai were in a bunch behind the leading pair. Not Out finished on strongly after losing ground in the middle Mauretanla led most of the way 'in the Post Handicap. Nightglass joined her after three furlongs, with Force, Hurry Girl, Stormy Petrel, and Silver Sands next. Nightglass and Mauretania led to the straight, and the latter stayed on for a narrow win. Roadsider finished well in third place, with Jolly Time, Dinah Dhu, Alert, and Hurry Girl next. The first StUd. - ■:.'■'■
