OBITUARY

£ SIR JEREMIAH COLMAN The death is announced from England of Sir Jeremiah Colman, chairman of Messrs J. and J. Colman, Ltd., at the age of 82 years. Sir Jeremiah Colman was one of H.M. Lieutenants for the City of London, president of the Surrey County Cricket Club from 1916-1923, a vice-president of the Boy Scouts' Association, vice-president of the Y.M.C.A., and Knight of Grace of the Ancient Order of St. John of Jerusalem. In 1904 he built and presented the Colman Institute, Redhill, and in 1930 presented the building for the Surrey Convalescent Home for Children, Bognor. MR JOHN THOMPSON The death occurred recently at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr W. H. Tills, Lyall Bay, Wellington, of Mr John Thompson, in his eighty-seventh year. He came to New Zealand at the age of three with his parents, who took up farming in the Otago district. Mr Thompson was engaged in sawmilling all his life, having owned mills in Catlins and Southland. Later he went to the North Island, where he was also engaged in sawmilling until his retirement 10 years ago. His wife died 16 years ago. He leaves" one daughter and two sons. MR H. McQUILLEN The death of Mr Henry McQuillen, a well-known resident of the Mataura district, occurred recently. Mr McQuillen was born at Geraldine Flat 59 years ago, being the third son of the late Mr James McQuillen, and he was educated at the Geraldine School. Later, for a number of years, he worked in the same district, and follow farming pursuits as far away as the Mackenzie Country and Mount Cook. He also spent some time in Central Otago. He went south to the Mataura district about 1906, where he entered into a partnership with his, brother, Mr P. McQuillen, in a farm property. On the death of his brother during the Great War he took over the property, and remained, in the districl up to the time of his death. In his youth Mr McQuillen was noted for his ability as a swimmer.
