Lieutenant W. Howell, of Waipiata, will leave to-day for a northern camp. Second-lieutenant M. S. Myers returned north yesterday morning after a period of leave in Dunedin. Dr Adolph Solansky has been appointed to act in Sydney as Consulgeneral for New Zealand on behalf of the Czechoslovakia Republic. Red Cross Headquarters at Geneva has cabled Mrs N. C. Speight that her husband, Lieutenant-colonel Norman Speight, N.Z.M.C., is a prisoner of war in an unstated Italian camp. The military appointments mentioned in last night’s Gazette are the granting of the temporary rank of lieuten-ant-colonel in the New Zealand Medical Corps to Captain A. E. Park, and the appointment of Major F. M. Jenkins, D.C.M., New Zealand Staff Corps, to the New Zealand Army Service Corps. Reference was made by the president of the Forbury Park Trotting Club, Mr B. S. Irwin, at a meeting of the executive of the club last night to the death of Mr L. Matson, of Christchurch, and it was decided to send a letter of sympathy to his son, Mr Allan Matson, of Christchurch. Mr Irwin also expressed tfie club’s sympathy with Mr and Mrs J. M. Samson, whose son, Mr Gavin Samson, was killed in a flying accident in England, and with Mr C. N. Draper, whose wife died recently. Passengers for the north by air yesterday were Mrs G. 9. Mann, Mr W. Kedzlie, Mr G. Stewart, Mr R. C. Burgess, and Mr and Mrs H. Sonntag for Christchurch, Mr M. Stewart, Dr M. Watt, and Mr F. J. Fenton for Wellington. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Mr and Mrs A. Menzies from Auckland, Miss N. Mac Kay and Mrs Fitchett from Wellington, Mrs E. N. Webb, Mrs I. Dawson. Master W. Dawson, and Mr R. J. Etheridge from Christchurch.
