FIGHTING IN BURMA MAIN CLASH AT PAAN (Rec. 2 a,m.) LONDON, Feb. 5. The main fighting in Burma is taking place around Paan, 25 miles north of Moulmein. Further air attacks were carried out on enemy concentrations this morning. . The Domei News Agency, Tokio, claims that the Japanese have entered Paan, but it is pointed out in London that even if this is correct it does not mean that the Japanese have crossed the Salween River. SURABAYA AGAIN BOMBED (Rec. 2 a,m.) LONDON, Feb. 5. Surabaya was again raided this morning and a number of fires were started among military installations. A Batavia communique states that the commander of the Dutch garrison at Balik Papan, with a number of his men, has succeeded in fighting his way out‘ through the Japanese forces attacking in the area. SINGAPORE SIEGE (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 5. So far as is known in London no landing attempt has been made at Singapore, but it is pointed out that the last official Singapore communique, which made no mention of a full-scale assault, was Issued before the Tokio announcement that a mass attack had started. General Chiang Kai-shek has sent a message to the Chinese residents of Singapore, exhorting them to be loyal and to endure all for the common cause. “ Victory for the Allies is our victory,” he states. EGYPTIAN GOVERNMENT (Rec. 2 a.m.) CAIRO, Feb. 4. The Wafd leader, Nahas Pasha, has been invited to form a new Government. PATROL ACTIVITY IN ÜBYA (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 5. A Cairo communique states that our patrol forces and flying columns have been active along the whole front. Sweeps by R.A.F. 'fighters and raids by bombers on enemy columns have been continued.
