“UTILITY” CLOTHING

BRITISH PRICE ORDER (Rec. 3.15 p.m.) RUGBY, Feb. 4. The maximum prices for the "utility” clothing introduced by the Government as a part of its general plans for the co-ordination of supply are fixed by a Board of Trade order which came into force yesterday. Examples of the prices are:—Men’s made-to-measure suits, £5 12s 3d; men’s ready-made suits, £4 16s 8d; women’s costumes, £4 17s sd. It is pointed out that “ utility ” clothing does not mean “ standard suits.” The scheme in short, aims at (1) avoiding waste of precious raw material in the production of worthless articles; (2) ensuring an adequate output of clothing of the types needed; and (3) preventing the soaring of clothing prices to levels beyond the reach of the mass of the public.
