RED BIRCH TIMBER

EVIDENCE OF DURABILITY

SOUND AFTER 75 YEARS

Erected 75 years ago in Lawrence, a wooden building now in process of demolition, provides evidence of the durability of certain classes of New Zealand timber. The building has been examined by individuals interested in the trade, and they have expressed the opinion that the suitability of red birch, which was used for weather-boarding, has been definitely established. Our Lawrence correspondent states that the framework of the building was constructed of red, white and black pine, while the weather boards consisted entirely of red birch. The framework had suffered badly from the ravages of borer, but the red birch timber, in spite of having withstood the weather for 75 years, remained entirely untouched, and was in an excellent state of preservation. In the opinion of an experienced builder, this timber could again be profitably used for building construction.
