WAYS WITH RUBBER

UTILISING INNER TUBES

With a little ingenuity a lot of useful articles and gadgets can be made from an inner tube that is no further use in a motors tyre. Rubber mats are some of the easiest things to make. You can cut a number of circles of even size, slip them into little linen cases, and use them under hot dinnerplates and dishes, and they will protect your polished table and prevent unsightly marks. You can put little rubber mats, too, under flower pots and vases and bowls and bulbs. Sometimes pottery bowls are rough underneath, and they cause scratches to appear on a polished surface, but if rubber mats are placed beneath the bowls scratches are avoided. Do you have rugs on stained and polished floors in your home, and do they slip about in an. alarming way after the floors have been freshly polished? To prevent this, stitch triangular pieces of. rubber under. the corners of the rugs and mats and they will then " stay put." Make, holes in the rubber with a punch, if you have one. and then sew the rubber to the mat or rug through the holes. Another use to which you can put oddments of rubber is to make rubber mops for cleaning jugs and vases. Cut a long strip of rubber and snip the edges of one side to make a fringe. Wrap the fringed strip "round the end of a small, smooth stick and bind it firmly with string.
