DAMAGE TO LIFE-SAVING GEAR RECENT DROWNING FATALITY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Feb. 4. Referring; to the comment by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr W. E. Parry, concerning damage by vandals to life-saving gear based on a statement by Mr A. Gardner, chairman of the Muriwai Beach Life-sav-ing Club, Mr J. C. Wiggins, postmaster and caretaker at Muriwai, said that the life-saving outfit used by the young woman going to the rescue on the occasion of the recent drowning fatality was in perfect order, and Mr Gardner's views were based on a misunderstanding. Mr Wiggins said inquiries had shown that in the effort to rescue Richard Hopkins, aged 21, who was drowned while going to the assistance of two children who were rescued by other swimmers, the rope was not attached to the young woman swimmer in the correct way, and the knot had come undone, two of the six corks attached to the belt being ripped off at tfe same time. Subsequently the line was tested inch by inch under police supervision, and found to be in excellent condition and the proper length.
