JAPANESE LANDINGS WEST COAST OF BORNEO (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 29. A Batavia communique reports the landing of Japanese at unspecified points on the west coast of Borneo and the gaining of local successes. All military were destroyed by the small Dutch forces before their withdrawal. THE BATTERED CONVOY UNLIKELY TO REACH OBJECTIVE (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 29. No further news has been received in London of the Macassar Strait battle, but it is stated authoritatively that the Japanese convoy is unlikely to reach its objective. A JAPANESE CLAIM FORTY MILES FROM SINGAPORE (Rec. 1.45 a.m.) TOKIO, Jan. 29. A Domei Agency message claimed that the main Japanese forces are within 40 miles of Singapore. The British are fighting desperately. AIR RAID ON RABAUL AUSTRALIAN PLANES (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON. Jan. 29. A Melbourne communique states that R.A.A.F. planes raided Rabaul to-day. Hits were scored on Japanese ships in the harbour. All the Australian planes returned safely. R.A.F. OFFENSIVE BOMBS ON MUNSTER (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 29. Munster, the capital of Westphalia and an important railway junction, was raided by the R.A.F. in force last night. The dcScks at Rotterdam were among the other targets attacked. Six bombers failed to return.
