The careful selection of colonists made by Edward Gibbon Wakefield was remarked upon by Miss Wakefield a few days ago, when she was speaking at the Early Settlers' Anniversary Day gathering in Auckland. The effect of that selection, she said, could be seen to-day. Members of the forces overseas had covered themselves with glory. " Would they have done so well if they had not been true chips of the old block, carrying within them all the best qualities of the best old British stock? " she asked.
