RACING NEWS

By Sentinel FIXTURES January 31.—Auckland R.C. February 7.—Canterbury J.C. February 7.—Winton J.C. February 7. —Matamata J.C. February, 7. 14.—Egmont R.C. The Gore Meeting.—Nominations are due to-day for the Gore Racing Club's meeting. . High Caste.—The Bulandshar horse High Caste has raised his score in stakes to £34,465. Engagements.—L. J. Ellis will have the mounts on Sir Simon and Edna's Birthday in their engagements at Auckland. Shorter Period at Barrier.—At the Takapuna Cup meeting the horses will be sent on to the track 10 minutes before starting time.

The Favourites.—Foxola and Gay Rosette are the ruling favourites for the Takapuna Cup and Llandaff and Cherry's Ticket for the Devonport Handicap. Indian Sun—The Bulandshar gelding Indian Sun, who once showed promise of developing good form on the flat, is engaged in the hurdle race at the Ashhurst meeting. Llandaff.—Although the Cambria Park horse Llandaff was unlucky in his recent races, he is not likely to be neglected ir. the Devonport Handicap.

Beau Leon.—Since he won the A.R.C. Handicap, Beau Leon has been great in defeat. He failed under the same weight in the Wellington Cup and has 10.0 in the Takapuna Cup, but not in such a good class.

Gay Rosette.—The Whirlwind mare Gay Rosette, who is one of the ruling favourites for the Takapuna Cup, galloped well on Tuesday. She beat Karatoki over 10 furlongs in 2min Bsec. She is reported to be in good shape for her engagement.

Middle Park Plate.—Winning form is not particularly well represented bv those remaining in the Middle Park Plate. Over 20 are engaged, and winning form is represented by Monetary, Egyptian Rose, Retriever. Compeer, and Winning Flight. Beau Ciel.—The Beau Pere gelding Beau Ciel, who is a recent addition to. C. C. McCarthy's stable, although bred on attractive lines, has failed to win this season. Last season Beau Ciel won nine times and was placed three times in 21 starts. His dam, Flying Mist, was formerly owned in Southland. She was got by Martian from Frichas, and is a sister to Caress, the dam of Cuddle and Padishah.

Winners.—The principal winning owner at the Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting was Mr J. A. McDougall, whose Cup winner, Happy Ending, won for him £I6OO in stake money and a gold cup value £l5O. Autolite and Hearth, respective winners of the thousand pound races, the Telegraph and Racing Club Handicaps, each won £7OO for owners Messrs B. McKnight and D. P. Wilson. Wild Talk and Wild Fox won £6OO for the estate of the .'ate Sir Charles Clifford.

Handicapping.—On the last day of the Auckland Cup meeting Foxola finished third in the Nathan Memorial Handicap when giving Gay Rosette 41b. Gay Rosette was badly left and in the Takapuna Cup Gay Rosette has to meet Foxola on 31b worse terms over an extra furlong. It would be interesting to know why the defeated horse has to meet the victress on worse terms instead of being allowed compensation for defeat.
