THE ALL PURPOSES APPEAL

TO THE EDITOR Sir,—The Mayor (like our Prima Minister in his reply to Mr Doidge'a telegram regarding the 40-hour week) gave a very evasive answer in your issue of Tuesday last to "John Bill's" letter regarding Otago Provincial Patriotic Council. The majority of returned soldiers have been antagonistic to the personnel of this council since its inception for the same reasons detailed in the letter from " John Bill." Much of the blame can be laid on the R.S.A. itself, which has in the year just drawing to a close possessed the most dumb executive that ever the local association enjoyed. Had there been a live executive which would have insisted on returned soldiers being on the Patriotic Council instead of on the " passenger " list the discontent now existing might not have been evident, and I am convinced that donations from returned soldiers generally would have been more generous than they have been in the past.—l am, etc., Dunedin. Jan. 28. Digger.
