RICCARTON NOTES

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 27. The No. 6 grass track and the plough were in good order this morning, and some useful sprints were done by horses engaged at Motukarara next week. Muffler, Rue, Irate, Don’t Forget, St. Cloud, and Palfrey were among the horses who went well, while the two-year-olds Retriever and Cross Question moved freely in short dashes. Anchorage slipped over three furlongs on the plough very fast. He is a three-year-old brother to Good Passage, by Winning Hit from Fast Passage, and he has a very attractive style of galloping. So far he has done no racing, but he has two engagements next week, being in the Middle Park Plate and the Trial Stakes. Though the three-year-old Monetary was left in the Middle Park Plate, he will not be a starter, as he has been lame in the last few days. He has not had a race since the Stewards’ Handicap, in which he finished second. While taking part in that race he was galloped on, and it is feared now that the trouble is likely to prove serious. Mrs J. Campbell, C. G. Humphries. A S. Ellis, R. Wilson. C. C. McCarthy, F. A Roberts, and G. H. Murfltt were among ihe Riccarton trainers who arrived home from Trentham with their horses this morning. A number of yearlings also came south. The remainder of the horses are expected back to-morrow, L. J. Ellis will go north to-morrow night to ride at the Auckland meeting on Saturday. Owing to a misunderstanding, he may not be on Fo.xola, so that Sir Simon and Edna's Birthday are his only definite mounts. A. E. Ellis has also been approached to make the trip, but a decision will not be made until to-morrow.
