TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel

FIXTURES February 7.—Wellington T.C. February 14—Canterbury Park T.C. February 14.—Auckland T.C. February 21.—New Brighton T.C. At WyntUiam.—The Wyndham Juvenile Stakes is open, being without restrictions in regard to ownership or training quarters. King’s Guide.—The Auckland-bred pacer King’s Guide won the Perth Handicap at Gloucester Park last month, adding to his good list of successes since being sold by Mr G. H. Trigg to a Western Australian owner. King’s Guide won off 12 yards, running 12 furlongs at a 2min 14sec mile rate. Another New Zealand-bred horse. Grand Mogul, was third from 72 yards, his rate being 2min 12sec. Too Fast to Last.—Gold Bar, Imin 59 3-ssec, is the first New Zealand-bred pacer to break the 2min standard for a mile, the best previous being Indianapolis, 2min 0 2-ssec, The Australian-bred Lawn Derby, Imin 59 2-ssec, holds the New Zealand and Australian record, and was the first outside of America to get under 2min. Another Australian, Van Derby, holds the world’s grass mile record of 2min 0 2-ssec. The first pacer to do better than 2min in America was Star Pointer, who in 1897 ran Imin 59|sec. Dan Patch in 1903 recorded Imin 56.Jsec, but the record was not allowed because he was assisted by a galloping pacemaker with wind and dirt shield. Later Dan Patch recorded Imin 55sec. He was possibly the greatest pacer ever foaled, and in 1903 he paced 13 exhibition miles in 2min 4sec or better, including records of Imin 59sec. Imin 59Jsec, Imin 59fsec, Imin 56.}sec. ana Imin Some of these records are not recognised because wind and dirt shields were used. The best record in recent years is Billy Direct’s Imin 55sec, made in 1938, while in the same year Greyhound trotted Imin 551 sec. In making their records Gold Bar and Lawn Derby were rated very fast in the early sections, and it is possible that, with a little more left for the final stage, they would have gone faster. Gold Bar was timed to run the first quarter in 28 l-ssec, half-mile 58sec. six furlongs Imin 27 3-ssec, the last quarter taking 32scc. Lawn Derby’s sectional times were 28 4-ssec, 58 4-ssec, Imin 28sec, and the final quarter in 31 2-ssec. When Van Derby made his record at Epsom he was rated more evenly, running the first two furlongs in 30 2-ssec, half-mile Imin 0 2-ssec, six furlongs Imin 30sec, and the last quarter in 30 2-ssec. Nervie’s Last, who at a previous stage held the Epsom record with 2min 4sec, ran the corresponding sections in 32sec, Imin 2 4-ssec, Imin 33 4-ssec. and the final quarter in 30 l-ssec. An instance of failures after great speed early was cited in November at Temora (says “Abaydos”), when the Australian pacing stallion Wilveranj, in an attempt to break 2min, ran the first furlong in 15sec, quarter in 28sec, and half-mile in 57 2-ssec, taking 2min 3sec to complete the mile.
