BOMBED LONDON

GRAPHIC PICTURES EXHIBITION IN DUNEDIN It may be difficult for many New Zealanders to realise what an intensive air raid means to a city. But the photographs which will be on view at the D.I.C. from next Wednesday, February 4, will help in bringing home to them the extent of the devastation wrought by Nazi bombers in the capital city of the Empire—damage wrought by a foe who does not discriminate between military objectives and places famous for their historical and cultural associations.

The photographs, which are 64 in number, are a gift to the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association from the Press Club, London.

One sees St. Paul’s standing serene in a sea of fire and ruin, but other churches and historic buildings have not escaped. There are some amazingly realistic, yet artistic, pictures of the damage suffered by Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the House of Commons, the Guildhall, the Old Bailey, the Tower of London, the Queen’s Hall, Oxford street, and many a famous church. Fire fighters and salvage men are seen at work, and one also sees London folk going unperturbed about their daily business, as well as the' London newspapers carrying on and not failing their public. Blitz or no blitz. London carries on.

The photographs are accompanied by a special message from Colonel J. J. Astor, M.P., chairman of The Times and of the Empire Press Union, who is also president of the Press Club. Each print has an adequate caption, and each has a very graphic story to tell. Admission to the exhibition is free, but there will be collection boxes in aid of the relief of distress in London.

The opening ceremony will be performed by the Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) at 3 p.m. next Wednesday.
