GIANT BRITISH BOMBER

WORLD’S HEAVIEST PLANE

(Rcc. 8.45 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 26. Although the giant four-engined Short-Stirling bomber has been prominently operating for over a year, details concerning it have just been released. It is the world’s heaviest aeroplane, and weighs over 30 tons when fully laden. It can carry a bomb load of over eight tons. It is 87 feet Jong, has a wing-span of 99 feet, is 23J feet high, and carries a crew of seven. There are also three gun turrets in which are mounted a total of eight Browning guns. The maximum speed is approximately 300 miles an hour and it has a range of over 2000 miles. Although it is such a giant, the ShortStirling is easy to manoeuvre and often chases German fighters, who do not tackle it unless they number at least three to one.
