FIRE BRIGADE SIRENS

REPLACEMENT BY HORNS SUGGESTED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 27. Superintendent Hume, of the Lower Hutt Fire Brigade, has proposed twotone alternate sounding horns instead of bells to replace the sirens on fire engines. Such horns are available, and are believed to be more audible than bells. In traffic the bells have proved little audible, and engine speeds have been reduced, giving fires more time to get a hold. There would be no confusion with the sound of sirens, these two-tone horns being quite distinctive.
