EROSION THREAT
DANGER TO KUROW WILLOWS IN RIVER BED (Special) WAIMATE, Jan. 26. To discuss the erosion threat to the bridge between Hakataramea and Kurow, a joint meeting of the Waimate and Waitaki County Councils and the Waitaki Power Board is to be held at the bridge on Friday afternoon The public works engineer from Christchurch will be present. The danger to the bridge and the township of Kurow has been emphasised repeatedly at recent meetings of the Waimate County Council. Mr A. N. Hayes, the Hakataramea Riding representative, stated at the November meeting of the council that the position so far as the Waitaki Bridge was concerned was serious. Maintenance charges on the bridge were allocated as follows: —Waimate County Council 15 per cent, Waitaki County Council 10 per cent., and the Main Highways Board 75 per cent. Mr Hayes added that as the position stood Kurow was ovon threatened. The bed of the river was a mass of willows. The county engineer (Mr W. P. Black) said that there was a danger ■that the river would cut a channel which would turn against the Kurow bank. Already a grant of £4OO from the Main Highways Board had been spent on the work of extracting willows from the bed of the river.
