WRITING PAPER

SHORTAGE IN GERMANY CAPTURED MATERIAL USED (Special) AUCKLAND, Jan. 26. Evidence of a shortage of writing paper in Germany, or that the authorities there are displaying considerable ingenuity in the use of captured material, is suggested in the receipt of a letter from a prisoner of war in Germany by his parents in Auckland at the week-end. The letter is written on the back of a printed form issued and used by the British army. A similar form has been utilised to improvise an envelope to carry the letter. It would seem that the forms which are numbered “Army Form, G 985” and bound in books of 100 sheets, were part of British materials captured either in Greece or Crete. In ordering prisoners to use this particular form for their correspondence. probably the German authorities thought to discover malicious or sardonic humour in the fact that it is headed “Discrepancy Report.” and is utilised in the army for notifying and charging losses of equipment.
