LIFE FOR OTHERS
YOUNG MAN DROWNED ATTEMPT TO AID BATHERS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 26. A young man was drowned when he attempted to go to the help of two children in difficulties in a heavy undertow at the Muriwai Beach yesterday afternoon. The victim was Mr Hopkins, son of Mr W. J. Hopkins, of 8 Geddes terrace, Avondale. When the children first were carried out Mr S. W. Jones, of Huapai, immediately went to their assistance and managed to reach them. He then found himself in some trouble, having both to look after, and Mr Hopkins entered the water. Mr Hopkins was almost immediately in difficulties, and a young woman swam out to him with a line. The line parted from the swimmer’s harness, however, and Mr Hopkins disappeared. The other four persons in the water managed to reach the shore, suffering only slight ill-effects from the experience. Mr Hopkins’ body has not yet been recovered.
