ST. HILDA'S COLLEGE

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING " This is an anxious time for educational institutions in particular, but I think their Value and importance have become emphasised by the times," said Bishop Fitchett, the chairman, at the opening- of the annual prize-giving ceremony of St. Hilda's Collegiate School, which was held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last night. "The world has become torn apart, and it will be for the pupils of to-day to put it together again. A school of this nature develops them for the task mentally, spiritually and physically," added Bishop Fitchett, who congratulated the school on the completion of its forty-fifth year. As chairman of directors, he thanked his associates for their work, and also those §ersons who had become " Friends ci t. Hilda's," and had given donations to assist the school.

Following the reading of the annual report by the Principal (Miss D. G Blackmore), Miss M. Stewart presented the prizes won during the year, and the proceedings closed with an address by Mr W. Downie Stewart, who urged tha pupils leaving school to carry good manners with them—thoughtfulness, kindness and consideration for other people. The Mayor (Mr A. H. FUNCTIONS AT SCHOOL On Saturday last, an evening m aid of the families of men serving in the navy was held in St. Hilda's Hall, which was, decorated with red, white, and blue flowers, and a large Union Jack at the back of the stage. The programme included piano solos, class singing, verse sneaking, singing, games, and songs in French and Latin, as well as two French plays and a play in Latin. A collection, taken during the performance, realised £7 7s. On Monday afternoon a physical education display was held in the gymnasium, a junior squad performed a drill table, and representatives from all forms from the Kindergarten to Form VI took part in an exhibition of gymnastic work. Following this, junior forms presented four English folk dances. Afternoon tea was then served, after which the girls of the senior dressmaking classes displayed the clothes which they had made during the year.
