S. HILDA'S COLLEGIATE SCHOOL
Standing on one of the most commanding and inspiring sites in Dunedin. with a panoramic view of the city and of the Otago Harbour, S. Hilda's enjoys a situation almost unrivalled for healthiness and beauty of surroundings. It has an ideal setting for a girls' school. The school was founded In 1896 by the late Primate of New /Zealand, Bishop Nevill. and for 35 years Was conducted by the Sister of the Church, whose headquarters are in London. ' Since 1931 It has been controlled by a Board of Governors under the Bishop of Dunedin, with a resident principal, a graduate appointed from England, who has lately returned from a visit to the Old Country. • The curriculum includes the preparation for the various public examinations:— Public Service, school certificate, University entrance, higher leaving, and national bursaries. The sixth form take a housecraft course during their final year, also a cultural course of appreciation of art and music. j Attached to the primary school Is a kindergarten for girls and boys between the ages of four and seven, under a trained mistress.
A fully qualified staff of resident and visiting masters and mistresses teach the usual subjects, including oral French, elocution, speech training, cookery, arts, crafts, drawing, painting, and commercial subjects. Amongst the school activities is included music, for which classes are held in piano, violin, harmony, and aural work, also musical appreciation, and there is a school orchestra.
