CITY POLICE COURT

Friday, December 5 (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.), Theft By Young Woman "It is unfortunate that this girl has been associating with showmen and consorting with at least one undesirable person," said Detective Sergeant T. Y. Hall when a young woman, aged 22. pleaded guilty to the theft of £6 Is. "My instructions are that a term of supervision would be in her own interests." Mr Hall said that last August the accused helped to organise a sports team among the employees of the firm for which she was working. She took responsibility for the funds, and when she left that employment she was unable to account for £6 Is. She admitted that she had spent the money and could not refund it.—Mr 0, G. Stevens, who represented the accused, said that she had broken off her undesirable associations. The charge had arisen from muddling rather than deliberate intent.— The magistrate admitted the girl to probation for 12 months on condition that her associations were guided by the probation officer and that the money was refunded. In view of her previous good character, he prohibited publication of the name. Liquor in Dance Hall Horace Wilson, licensee of the Brown House, who made a voluntary appearance, pleaded guilty to a charge .of permitting liquor to be consumed in a dance hall. After hearing evidence, the magistrate adjourned the case until a number of other charges arising from the same set of circumstances are heard.—Sergeant Conway said that as a result of complaints the police visited the Brown House at 11.20 p.m. last Saturday. There were between 80 and 100 people in the hall, and there was a quantity of liquor on the tables. A number of neople would appear in court later on other charges. There was no suggestion that Wilson had been supplying liquor—Mr R.L. Fairmaid, who appeared for the defendant, said that Wilson had been proprietor of the Brown House for 16 months, and conducted the hall in a decent and respectable manner.. "Short of a search of each individual patron," counsel said, "It would be impossible to prevent people from. taking liquor into the hall." There was no suggestion of anything in the nature of riotous or disorderly behaviour at the hall. Reservist Charged John Murray Russell Osborn was remanded to appear at Christchurch on December 8 on a charge of failing to report to the army authorities when called up for medical examination. Traffic Offences Frederick John Newell was fined 20s. and costs (3s) for driving a motor car at a speed greater than 30 miles an hour.
