Concert;—A bright variety; concert presented by the Lawrence Red Cross Society Voluntary Aids to raise funds for equipping their, class-room was held in the Town Hall on Tuesday night. The organiser, Mrs R. F. Batchelor, assisted by a sub-committee with Miss Beta Highley as secretary, had assembled a number of talented performers, including several from Waitahuna and Tuapeka West. Hickman contributed "' elocutionary items, while Messrs Shaw, Lea, Blair, arid Cumming appeared in ;a popular male quartet. Mesdames Haglund, Gray, and North rendered a vocal trio, and the Rev. J. B. Shaw and Mrs Shaw, and the Rev. Mr and Mrs Irwin contributed vocal duets. An acceptable" item . was the pianoforte duet by Mrs J. R. Shaw and Miss M.Cameron: Those taking part in the play, " Old Moore's Almanac," were Misses Stokes, Suters, and Weston, and Messrs Haglund and Weston, and the concluding item was a drill display by the Vountary Aids. At an interval in the programme the president of the society introduced Mrs R. Bruce Smith, representative of'the Otago Red Cross Society, who spoke of the work of the society and the Voluntary Aids during war-time. She congratulated Lawrence on the appearance of its unit, consisting of 26 . qualified Voluntary Aids, and presented certificates to the following: Misses R. Highley, M. J. Milne, M. Martin, E. D. K. Carson, and P. Haworth (honours), D. Suters, A. Hogg, K. Gare. B. Cummings, V. Fahey, M. Suters, A. Forbes, K. Leslie; I. Irvine, M. Stokes, M. Weston, J. Stokes, and N. Munro, Mesdames J. F. McTavish, E. I. Winmill, G. Crowley, C. M. Perream, A. E. Lennard, G. M. Suters, J. S. Tonkin, and R. C. Moore. A Weightguessing Competition for a sheep was won by Mr G. A. Guthrie. The total proceeds of the function amounted to £35.

ALEXANDRA Borough Council.—The monthly meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday night and was attended by the Mayor (Mr A. McKellar), and Crs A. B. Armour, G. H. Fox. A. L. Hern, E. Russell, G. R. Campbell, R. S. Kinnaird, J. R. McKissock, and T. E. Sunderland. Mr H. H. Ferguson wrote requesting the council to grant him portion of the area on the Earnscleugh side of the Molyneux River. It was stated that the council could not grant a title to this 1 area, but that it would raise no objection to Mr Ferguson planting trees as he desired on the area in question. The?
