PARKING LIMITS
BREACHES IN SHOPPING AREAS CHIEF INSPECTOR'S ATTITUDE The trouble caused recently to business firms with premises in the main streets of the city by motorists who ignored the parking regulations were reviewed in a report presented to the fortnightly meeting last night of the Dunedin City Council by the chief traffic inspector (Mr E. H. Barrett). It was explained by Cr D. C. Jolly on behalf of the General Committee that the chief inspector had made the report in consequence of comment at the last meeting of the council on the number of parking tickets that had been issued by his staff.
Business People Concerned
The parking by-laws had not been enforced for some time, the minute stated, with the result that cars were parked in the restricted areas for long periods. Several written and many verbal applications had been received from business people for "Keep Clear" signs outside their premises. The manager of one firm had given an' assurance that his firm was losing business through country clients being unable to pick up bulky goods from the shop, and another shopkeeper in Princes street south had been advised by his carrier that he would refuse to convey any more goods to or from the shop unless the front was kept reasonably clear. A check-tip showed that seven cars were parked for more than six hours; 19 cars for more than five hours in the 60-minutes' parking area, and one car for five hours in the 15-minutes' parking area. Altogether 62 parking tickets were issued for periods very much in excess of the limit, and warning letters were forwarded to the persons concerned.
A Reasonable Attitude " Unrestricted parking is available within easy distance of the business area," the report concluded, "and it is not unreasonable to ask drivers to use these areas when their vehicles are not being used for lengthy periods." Commendation of the attitude of the chief inspector, which he described as reasonable and conciliatory, was expressed by Cr L. J. T. Ireland.
