MOSGIEL HOME GUARD

A VARIED SYLLABUS

The Mosgiel and District Home Guard Company continues to take a keen interest in its varied syllabus. The O.C. (Captain C. H. Bleach) takes the n.c.o.'s in a "mutual instruction" class, while Company Sergeant-major J. Jamieson has the remainder of the company for various drill. Sergeant Preston recently gave a lecture on the hand grenade,' and the company attended a lecture on artificial respiration. Last week's parade was marked by the attendance, for the first time since the establishment of this rank in the Home Guard, of Warrant Officer W. Marshall, jun., from headquarters staff. He gave instruction on the hand grenade and a lecture on "Compliments."

A week ago the O.C. paid a visit to the Allanton Platoon, under Platoon Commander Baird, where instruction was given on the Lewis gun. The signal section of the Mosgiel Company is grateful to many friends who have given or lent telephones, wire, etc. Among those who have assisted are the following:—Platoon Commander H. C. Connor, Sergeant-major J. Jamieson, Corporal J. A. Revill, Guardsmen R. L. Fairmaid. D. Gough, Traffic Officers E. Hasler, G. Densem, and J. Tweed, and the Mosgiel Presbyterian Church. The traffic section has been issued with boots. Platoon Commanders H. C. Connor and J. Watt are at present in Burnham military camp undergoing a short refresher course. On Saturday next the company will again journey to its defensive positions. Guardsmen will meet at the Recreation Ground bv 2 p.m. Sandbags, or any suitable old bags, and building materials for positions and shelter are urgently needed. Old tar drums or flat iron and heavy timber would be very acceptable.
