BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Owing to the absence of the president, Mrs R. W. S. Botting (vice-presi-dent) presided at the monthlv meeting of the Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors. Those present were: Mesdames C. M. Begg, A. G. W. Dunningham, F. DerekSmith, R. Ellis, E. R. Kerr, C. L. Young, Misses M. Begg. G. Farnie, P. Jones, V. McMillan, I. Rawnsley, and L. Vial. The subject of increased accommodation for girls at the hostel was discussed, the general secretary reporting that the Exscutive Committee and members of the Advisory Board had inspected a house in Tennyson street, with a view to opening an auxiliary hostel. This house had proved unsuitable for the purpose, and inquiries were being made concerning anothsr house. Members present stressed the need for some extension of the hostel, as several girls requiring accommodation early in the year had applied for board, but had been unable to obtain it.

The financial statement for Octobei was adopted and accounts amounting to £263 were passed for payment. It was decided to send to national office £4O for the Chinese Association.

A brief report and statement were received from the Milton Hostel, showina that 13 girls were in residence. Miss Frances Mowat, assistant to Miss Mcßae.. commenced duties on November 1. The residents appreciated the piano sent by the Dunedin Association. Gifts of fruit, vegetables, and flowers had been received, and a beginning had been made to establish a garden.

Plans were made for the duties at the Services Club on November 28, 29, and 30. Mrs R. Ellis reported that the Lady Guild had several parcels to forward. The weekly meetings would be discontinued Until the first Tuesday in February. The hostel report stated that there

were 52 residents, and 48 visitors had stayed for varying periods. Three applications for permanent board had been refused owing to lack of room. The committee had held a jumble sale to help to pay the cost of renovations, and this had realised £ll. ,

The report of the House and Cafeteria Department showed a busy month, several functions having been held. Gifts of firewood, a door to replace a gate, and linoleum had been received. Miss Jones reported for the Activities Department that membership in club groups was increasing. The girls' drama festival had been held, four plays being presented. The winning play was "The Dear Departed," produced by the hostel girls, the 3-Y-9 Club being placed second, while the "Story of the Willow Pattern" was specially commended by the judge. Club programmes had included talks on nutrition by Mrs A. K. Ibbotson, and on vocational guidance, by Miss Vial, and also a Hallowe'en party, as Well as other social events. Miss Delight Lynn had talked to both junior and senior clubs on the girls in Burma and manners and customs of that country. Arrangements had been made to have the use of the Y.M.C.A. swimming baths on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, Miss Gwen Rix offering her services as coach. The girls had held a social evening with the members of the Y.M.C.A., an enjoyable evening being spent. The health and recreation department report stated that the interhouse sport day had been a great success. The baseball, cricket, lawn tennis and athletic clubs were all practising regularly, but play had been hampered owing to wet weather. Miss Nancy Hanlin and Miss Edna George were appointed delegates for the department to the employed girls' conference in Napier. The general secretary reported that the functions arranged for the visit of Miss Lynn had been successful, and members (both women and girls) had been very much. interested in all Miss Lynn had had to tell of Burma. The world's week of prayer services had included a sunrise service at 7 o'clock on Sunday morning, and a combined service of committee and members was held, at which an address was given by Mrs J. D. Salmond. A gift of a piano had been received from Miss K. Begg. This was much aopreciated. and was a boon to the girls' department. A vote of thanks was passed to Miss Begg. It was decided to recommend to the Furnishing Committee that two rooms m the administrative building should be renovated.
