ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was held last night and was attended by Messrs R Fountain (chairman), G. E. Turner, J. M Paterson, C. M. Greenslade, G. Peate, W. Raffills, S. H. Barnes, A. J. White, G. Porter, H. G. Williams, C. A. Wilson, and S. F. Aburn The reports of the Angling, Game, Game Research, and Pheasant Committees were received and approved. The hatchery curator, Mr W. H. Claringbold, reported that 40,000 trout fry had been' liberated in Lagoon. A further 20,000 fry would be liberated in the same water, and 10,000 in the Catlins River. There were 134,000 fry at the hatchery, and these would be raised to the fingerling stage.—The report was adopted. The ranger, Mr D. McLeod, reported that all rivers to the south of Dunedin were in flood at present, but should be in fair order by next week-end.— The report was adopted. Reports were received of an organised expedition to the Styx area to shoot shags. Some shags were found to contain trout. In all, about 100 birds were killed.—The chairman said he thought the effort had been well worth while.

Reports were received of several prosecutions for breaches of the opossum trapping regulations. Offenders had appeared at court sittings at Alexandra, Gore, and Owaka, and fines ranging from 10s up to £4 had been -imposed. The principal offences related to incorrect markings on skins offered for sale.
