EVENING SPORTS

UNPLEASANT CONDITIONS SEVERAL GOOD PERFORMANCES A strong northerly wind and misty conditions were not conducive to good performances at the weekly evening sports meeting of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association last night, but the programme of events was an interesting one. In spite of the strong wind which met competitors in track and field events, several creditable performances were recorded. In the sprints, times were slow, but the performances were worthy of note. Running from scratch, Miss J. McGrath (Otago) again got through the field to win the 75 Yards Handicap in 9 4-ssec. A. E. Churchill, the Southern footballer, won the 100 Yards Handicap from the 4yds mark in Usee, and A. L. Carson's performance in winning the Junior 100 Yards in the same time off syds was another excellent effort by this young runner, who also won the Junior 120 Yards Hurdles in 18 4-ssec. An exciting finish was witnessed in the Junior 880 Yards, which was won by the .King's High School runner, S. W. McGregor, in 2min 9 l-ssec. In the field events, one of the best performances of the evening was that of Miss R. Emslie (Ex-girls) in winning the Women's Discus Throw. Her actual throw was 85ft 9in, but she had the assistance of the wind. W. <A. Thompson (University), a former secondary schools' champion, won the Junior Javelin with a good throw of 123 ft loin against the .wind. A. J.
