AUSTRALIA'S EFFORTS

WAR EXPENDITURE LOAN*LAUNCHED IN SYDNEY SYDNEY, Oct. 8. At a crowded meeting in the City Town Hall last night the new Prime Minister (Mr J. Curtin), in his first public address, launched the £100,000,000 war and conversion loan. He said the Labour Government willingly accepted the obligation and legacy of waging war to the limit of Australia's capacity and a successful conclusion. He knew what the Australian people wanted. They wanted the country to be properly organised. They wanted the Government to do things requisite for waging the winning of the war. Speaking on behalf of the Labour Government, he said that would be done with full appreciation of what it would mean

When the House of Representatives met to-day, Mr Curtin announced that he had sent a cablegram to Mr Churchill assuring him of the Government's determination to prosecute a vigorous war effort. The new Treasurer, Mr Chifley. told the House that the Labour Budget would be introduced in about three weeks. In the meantime Parliament would adjourn.
