CRUCIAL STAGE

THE ATLANTIC BATTLE SWARMS OF U-BOATS BOMBERS COOPERATING (Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 6. The Battle of the Atlantic is entering a crucial period, states Mr Drew Middleton, correspondent of the Associated Press of America, in a message from Reykjavik, Iceland. He adds: “A great onslaught of German submarines comparable in scope with that of March and April is well under way. There is no complacency among naval officials ana merchant captains here, and all regard the situation as very critical. It is believed that 600 submarines are operating in the Atlantic, plus 200 Focke Wulfe Kurriers and Condors for observation and bombing. In spite of the increasing U-boat losses the Germans, it is claimed, are maintaining their full strength.”
