RACING AND TROTTING

RACING NEWS

By Sentinel

FIXTURES September 25, 27—Geraldine R.C. September 27.—Foxton R.C. September 27, 29.—Ohinemuri J.C. October 2, 4.—Hawke’s Bay J.C. October 9, 11.—Master ton R.C. October 11, 13.—Dunedin J.C.

Knight Commander.—As a stayer who got safely round in his first race over hurdles at Ashburton in soft going, Knight Commander may develop into a successful hurdler. Cup Candidates.—New Zealand Cup candidates in The Wrecker, Dictate, The Raker, Cherokee, Prudent Prince, Gay Parade, and Airline are engaged in the Geraldine Cup. Avenal, The Nightmarch mare Avenal went fast at Ashburton in the early part of a mile race, but faded out. She is engaged over six furlongs at Geraldine. Her record last season was unplaced in nine starts. Nightdress.—With Fundy Bay absent, Nightdress appeals as the best of those engaged in the hurdles at Geraldine. The extra furlong will be in his favour. One mistake at Ashburton cost him a win.

Haughty Winner.—The Winning Hit gelding Haughty Winner has shaped best up to a mile. He, however, won over a mile and a-quarter at Wellington with 8.1 in 2min 4Jsec as a four-year-old. Deferred.—So that horses owned by bookmakers can fulfil engagements in important spring races, the Victorian Racing Club committee decided that the rule banning bookmaker-owners would take effect from January 1, 1942, instead of from October 1.

Dunedin Spring Meeting.—The nominations and the fields in the McLean Stakes and Dunedin Guineas contain ample material to provide a successful meeting and an attractive card for each day. Valorem. —The Valkyrian gelding Valcron finished fourth with 9.7 in the Summer Handicap after a slow start. He meets Parchment on better terms than at Riccarton,_ but a tendency to dwell at the start is an extra handicap at Geraldine. Ferrlby.—On the turning course at Geraldine Ferriby may get a big lead in the hurdle race, but he will have to cover a furlong more than he failed over at Ashburton. He, however, had to act at Ashburton in heavy going. Cymric.—Laat season Cymric 'won under big weights over a mile and nine furlongs, and up to a mile and a-quarter on the West Coast. He has since been failing under a light weight, probably because he was sent to the front and left without a finish. Speedsters.—Military Maid and Hurry Girl can go fast, but seven furlongs may find them lacking at Geraldine. Military Maid shaped fairly well over seven furlongs at Waimate when giving 51b to Stabilise. Promising Form.—The manner in which Parchment and Ackemma were running on at the end of a mile in heavy going at Ashburton suggests that they may be dangerous over nine furlongs at Geraldine.

Squatters’ Handicap.—The strength of the field for the Squatters’ Handicap may alter considerably if Haughty Winner and Gay Parade start in the Geraldine Cup. If they are absent, Waitoru, King’s Toast, and Stabilise may be in demand. Return to Form.—T. Green had a winning mount at the Poverty Bay meeting. At one time he was in the front rank, and won the Auckland Cup on Rapier, Royal Stakes on Agrion, Prince Humphrey, Honour, and Greenaway.'. New Zealand Derby on Agrion and* Honour, New Zealand St. Leger on Satrap and Peter Jackson, Taranaki Cup on Piuthair, Yoma, and Vertigern. Takapuna Cup oh Eden Hall, and other important races.

Cup Winners. —Two winners of the Geraldine Cup in Night Dress and Roy Bun are engaged in the hurdle race at Geraldine. Roy Bun won with 7.2 in 2min 7sec, and Night Dress with 7.6 in 2min 17sec. Over hurdles, Night Dress is giving Roy Bun 121 b, but the former ranks as a winner over the “small sticks” and the other has yet to win, but may do so at Geraldine.

Atreus. —If Atreus could come back to form he would keep the opposition busy in the Raukupuka Handicap. He was a good two-year-old, and now races as a gelding. He had a race at the Grand National meeting, when he pulled up fairly well, and his class makes him worthy of note. Conditions may, however, be in favour of Good Scout and Milton Abbas. Airline.—lf Airline ran up to his form in the South Canterbury Handicap, which he won with 7.1 'in 2min 4sec, he would be hard to beat in the Geraldine Cup. He beat Prudent Prince by half a length, and now meets him on 121 b better terms. In the same race ,Gay Parade was fourth, and Airline meets him op 101 b better terms. Cherokee was amongst the unplaced lot. and meets Airline on 11b better terms, and Cymric, who was amongst the also started, meets Airline on about 121 b better terms. Airline, if ready to go a mile and a-quarter. looks the pick of the handicap, or. at least, one of the best on paper.

Geraldine Cup. —St. Cloud has won over a mile and a-quarter in moderate company at Greymouth. and her form at the Grand National meeting suggests that she will probably saddle up one of the fittest horses in the Geraldine Cup. Condition is a big factor in a horse’s favour at the early spring meetings. Haughtv Winner was finishing on in his race at Ashburton and has winning form up to a mile and aouarter. The distance may. however, be a bit beyond him at present, but. fit and well, he would be dangerous With a stronger rider up Prudent Prince might have beaten Wild Talk at Ashburton, where he fought on well in heavy going, and the race at least showed him to be well forward in condition. He won the Birthday Handicap with 7.12 when giving Cherokee lib and a length beating. C'-erokee now comes in on 81b better terms, and on paper should beat Prudent Prince. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES October 4.—Methven T.C. October 4.-S i Thames T.C. October 11.—New Brighton T.C. October 25. 27.—-Greymouth T.C. October 25. 27.—Auckland T.C. October 27.—Oamaru T.C. Bing Crosby.— After giving some trouble at the barrier. Bing Crosbv went away safely in the Wellington Handicap and was immediately taken to the front. Bing Crosby was first to turn for home, closely followed by Haughty and Southern Smile. M. Holmes gave Bing Crosbv no rest, and he was under a hard drive over the last furlong. He stuck to his task in a courageous manner and eventually won by three lengths. Strong Finishing Run —The favourite Joan Conauest nut up a gallant fight in the Railwav Handicap, but could not withstand the strong finishing run of Gold Flight, who had a good run on the rails throughout. Joan Conquest was first to turn for home and looked like winning a hundred yards from the finish, but Gold Flight then came through and won going away by two lengths from the favourite. The Wellington Stakes— Great News proved too good for Pacing Power in the Wellington Stakes, but he was assisted to 1 some extent by the fact that the favourite made an indifferent beginning. Leamington was the early leader, but Great News soon headed

him and held the lead throughout. After covering six furlongs the order was Great News, Pacing Power. Leamington. Lady Tornado, Safari and Warform. Warform improved her position down the back stretch and was third as they turned for home. Once straightened un Pacing Power challenged Great News and was almost on terms with a furlong to go. Great News hung on tenaciously and was doing better than the favourite over the last hundred yards. GERALDINE MEETING THE FIELDS FOR TO-DAY The fields engaged at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting, which will be opened to-day, should supply, good racing, but the' form will be followed with considerable interest on account of many of those engaged holding more important engagements in tire near future. Rousseau 7.7. RICCARTON NOTES GERALDINE PROSPECTS (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 24. Although they will meet many op poneTTfs from other training centres, Riccarton stables will be strongly represented in all the events at the Geraldine meeting, which will open tomorrow. In the First Hurdles there is a field of twelve, and nine of them are from here. Night Dress ran a good race to be second at Ashburton, after being allowed to drop back a long way, and as the extra distance will help him he will be hard to beat. Roy Bun was third at Ashburton, and will improve. Knight Commander may be backward. Flame Queen will benefit by racing. Ferriby stopped at Ashburton, due to heavy goiiig, and he will be a different horse on a firm track. Roddy goes fast, but his stamina is in doubt. Great Flight failed to stay at Ashburton, and Potent and Grey Night are new and will need experience. Of the maidens in the Ohapi Handicap, it will only need a repetition of Ashburton form for Calypso to be in the money. Myraid was sixth in the same race, after getting a bad run. and he is due any time for a win. as he is a good galloper, with stamina Lord Dundas has been galloping ven well lately, and should be a good performer later on. The others from here do not appeal in this field. St. Cloud is in good order and should run well in the Geraldine Cup. Her third in the Winter Cup was a good trial for a mile and a-quarter on the turning Orari track. Haughty Winner has not been racing well. Prudent Prince only needs to repeat his Ashburton form to be in the money. Gay Parade has another engagement, but if started in the Cup he may show

up for a long way. He is capable of running out the full journey. Dictate has had two races this season, and his recent track form points to success at any time now. Cymric disappointed at Ashburton, with everything his own way. The Wrecker has no form.

The Raukapuka Hack Handicap is a race for apprentices, and this complicates the situation. Military Maid ran well at Ashburton, and is coming on. Atreus has shown brilliant track form lately, and is due at any time for a sprint race. Good Scout had an easy win at Ashburton, and the extra furlong will help him. Hurry Girl failed over seven furlongs at Riccarton, but should stay better on this track. Scottish Dale has been galloping well, but a shorter journey will favour her. Force looks ready to show form, and Warfield is an improver.

Out of nine in the Squatters’ Handicap, two have earlier' engagements. They are Haughty Winner and Gay Parade, and the latter will be hard to beat if reserved for the sprint. Form, however, points to Stalibise and Sham Boy fighting their Ashburton battle over again, and Stabilise may be the favourite. Waitoru will again be a dangerous opponent. King’s Toast will be having his first race since the autumn, and he has been galloping so well that he should be in the money before long. There are some good staying hacks in the Belfield Handicap. Blue Abbey is well, and is due for improved form soon Parchment came home very fast in third place at Ashburton, and he should be in the money . again. Ackemma is another who sticks on well, and early success can be looked for. Crossmaglen has no form yet, and Rousseau may need some racing. Good Health was not started at Ashburton, but he has done so much good work lately that he is likely to be favourite. With 17 the safety number, the Ohapi Hack’ Handicap will be run in divisions unless there are four scratchings. notes from Invercargill (Special) INVERCARGILL, Sept 24. Southland stables are represented in the list of nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting by Doubieack, Black Bard, Irish Ruler, and Macedione (R. E. McLellan), Anglo-Irish, Chandelier and Colonel Rouge (W. E. Hazlett). Dark Flight and Winning Flight (D. M. Tweedie), Royal Lancer. Desert Maid and the two-year-old filly by Paper Money from Queen Astrid. (F. W. Ellis) , Phalanx (T. Pollock). Platform (F. J. Boyle) and Millibar (J. Thistleton). Knight of Old, Anglo-French and Sir Denis were sent over five flights ot hurdles this morning. Knight of Old went solo and did not shape up to his usual high standard. Anglo-French gave a capital display in company with Sir Denis and Mr W. E. Hazlett has a promising young jumper in the four-year-old son of Sir Simper. Sir Denis gave a fair display. Further foalings at Mr W. T. Hazlett’s Chelandry Stud are a filly by Sir Simper from Parysia (Tractor—Moulin Rouge), and a colt by Sir Simper from Irish Agnes (Colonel Cygnus—Bridget). This makes three colts and three fillies foaled so far this season at this stud. Melodist (Nigger Minstrel—Steetqn) cut an artery when she suffered an injury to a hind Teg in a gallop on Tuesday morning, but she did not go lame, and F. W. Ellis expects to have her back in work again after a short spell. The two-year-old colt by Paper Money from Lucky Pal, who got cast in his box a few days ago, is also having a spell from the tracks, though nothing serious has developed so far in the leg that he struck.

Top Spin has been recpmmissioned and is in good order to start a preparation.
