GIFT CIGARETTES
ISSUE TO TROOPS OVERSEAS PRECAUTION AGAINST SALE (P.AJ WELLINGTON. Aug. 26. Arrangements are being 1 made to have packets of cigarettes sent on behalf of the people of the Dominion by the National Patriotic Fund Board to the New Zealand forces overseas overprinted with ’“the words “ Patriotic Issue,” instead of a gift announcement being pldced inside the packets. This step is being taken with a view to preventing a recurrence of the sale of gift cigarettes, and is in line with the recommendation made recently by the Overseas Commissioner (Lieuten-ant-colonel F. Waite), who outlined several of the difficulties that had been met' with in connection with the gif' cigarettes, but considered the reports of their sale grossly exaggerated. Instead of discontinuing the gift issues because of the difficulties an endeavour should be made to make the scheme perfect, he said.
