CURIOUS ACCIDENT CASE EXPLOSION OF DETONATOR (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Aug. 26. , A curious accident was revealed in a compensation case, in which Mr Justice O’Regan pave his reserved decision today. awarding a carpenter, Daniel Joseph Convery, £473 17s as damages, with costs. The facts were not in dispute. Convery. while erecting a farmer’s_ cottage at Levin under the Rural Housing Act, hit a projecting nail with his hammer, as it appeared to be liable to catch anyone passing it. The effect of the blow was to set off a detonator, which in some manner was lodged on a rafter, and Convery lost an eye and suffered other injuries. The Crown, the defendant, denied liability on the ground that at the time of the accident Convery was doing alterations fpr. the. tenant of the house, and was exceeding his authority.
