CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS

,10 THE EDITOR Sir,—Some of the statements made by appellants before the military appeal boards are, to say the least, conflicting. In answer to a question one witness said recently that if everyone was a Christian they should hand over the country (Britain) to Germany. That is a rather sensational statement after our appeasement efforts. Another witness said the war was not the result of unprovoked attack by Germany, and yet Mr Cordell Hull and others have stated that Nazism’s policy is aggression. As for Christ’s teaching, did He not tell us to render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God. His? If the State is not acting in opposition to the Christian belief it has a' right to claim personal service for its defence. Otherwise, why should the State police the country in the interests of order and good government?—l am, etc., Justftia. Dunedin, Aug. 11.
