BIRTHDAY HONOURS

THE BRITISH LIST MR R. B. BENNETT A VISCOUNT RUGBY, June 12. The birthday honours list this year appears in two sections. That which is published to-day is confined to civilians. Mr R. B. Bennett, former Canadian Prime Minister, has received the highest honour. He has been made a viscount. Mr Bennett is now living in England. Another Canadian, Mr Vincent Massey, High Commissioner for Canada, has been honoured. He becomes a Privy Councillor. Professor Lindemann, a distinguished Oxford scientist, the designer of the balloon barrage, a personal friend of the Prime Minister and since the. war his personal assistant, is one of three new barons. Sir Archibald Sinclair, Air Minister, becomes a Knight of the Thistle, the highest Scottish honour, which is limited to 14 members. Mr A. V. Alexander, First Lord of the Admiralty, becomes a Companion of Honour,

Miss Myra Hess, the well-known pianist, has been made a Dame Companion of the British Empire. Apart from her brilliance as a player, Miss Hess did great service to music and to the public in organising daily concerts at the. National Gallery at the time when the heavy raids on London had greatly reduced public entertainments.
