MAJOR JOHN HIDDLESTONE

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 13. Advice was received by his wife in Auckland to-day that Major John Hiddlestone, senior chaplain of the combined Baptist, Church of Christ and Congregational denominations, is reported missing, believed prisoner of war. Major Hiddlestone left New Zealand early in the war, and was with the forces in England and later in Egypt. He was in Greece, sleeping out in the snow with the soldiers in the Mount Olympus region, and escaped from a tiny port in Greece, arriving in Egypt with the clothes he was wearing and a Communion .set. Before going overseas Major Hiddlestone was pastor of the Epsom Baptist Church at Auckland, and for 15 years secretary of the Auckland Baptist Auxiliary. He formerly resided in Christchurch. In the last war he was in the ranks and saw service in France.
