BALCLUTHA High Tides at Kaka Point.—Exceptionally high tides were experienced at Kaka Point on Wednesday. The tide covered the sand spits in the vicinity of the old Molyneux Bay and at the river mouth, and encroached on the roads and also at the lower end of Paretai, where -paddocks were under water. So high was the tide that it washed out the rubble wall erected by the County Council at the northern approach tp the road over Kaka Point. Dangerous gaps have been made In the side of the rOad facing the sea.

Borough Rating.—At a special meeting of the Balclutha Borough Council held oh’ Wednesday night to. consider the estimates for the current year, the new rates were so arranged as to permit of a reduction of 2i per cent, as compared with the rates levied last year. The Mayor (Mr J. R. Copland) and Cr Keen (chairman of the Finance' Committee) were appointed to wait on the Lower Clutha River Trust at its’ next meeting, with a view to securing a reduction in the rate levied over portion of the Balclutha Borough. It was stated that this amounted to £BOO a year, and the borough received nothing for it. ... Man-power Appeal Board. —A sitting of the Southland Man-power Appeal Boaro to hear anpeals against territorial service was held at Balclutha. The board comprised Messrs E Murriey (chairman), D Cockburn and D, W. Stalker. The appeals were mainly based on the claims of farming. Transport' Licensing.—A sitting of the No 4 Transport Licensing Autlionty (Mr S V. Raines) was held at Balclutha yesterday. An application by . the Clutha Carrying Company, which was represented by Mr C..J L, White, for the transfer of a heavy goods licence from Cunningham Bros.. Romahapa, and the, conversion of two town licences to area licences in order to cope with increased business, was opposed by the South Otago Transport Company (Mr J. B. Thomson, Dunedin). After evidence had been taken, the hearing was adjourned sine die, to be resumed at Dunedin.—Applications by J. E. Lloyd and S. Lloyd (Clinton) for the renewal of heavy# truck licences were adjourned to Dunedin.—J. F. Keach (now on active service) applied for the suspension of his tqxl-cab licence for the duration of the war. The Authority said he could not do that, but would suspend it to August 31 (the date of issue).—The application of Galbraith Bros., Tahakopa, tp reduce their truck licences by one was granted.—J. O. Forsyth, Owaka, applied to have his goods licence amended to. include the whole of Otago for the cartage of skins, and to transfer the licence to his brother while the applicant was In camp. Mr C. D. McKenzie, assistant railway traffic manager, opposed the unlimited area unless the skins or wool were shipped at the nearest railway station for transit to Dunedin. The Authority, said he would hold the application over until the vehicle had been repaired, and the brother would have to make application personally for the transfer of the licence.
