OTAGO WOMEN’S CLUB

FOUNDATION MEMBERS ENTERTAINED To celebrate the twenty-seventh anniversary of the founding of the Otago Women’s Club, the president and executive entertained foundation members in the club rooms on Thursday afternoon. The president, Lady Ferguson, who received the guests, wore a mustard coloured coat over a dress in powder blue, and a smart black hat. In a speech of welcome. Lady Ferguson gave an interesting review of the origin and history of the club and made reference to some of the early members, specially mentioning Miss Gether, who is now in Denmark. It is hoped to send a message to her from the club. “ It’s not what we get. but what we give measures the success of the life we lead,” quoted Lady Ferguson at the conclusion of her address. Mrs G. Fitzgerald, on behalf of the present members, expressed 1 appreciation and thanks to the original committee and presented Lady Ferguson and each member of the original committee present with floral sprays. Miss Ross, on behalf of the foundation members, presented Lady Ferguson. who is a “ woman of the trees with a sum of money for the million shilling tree fund inaugurated by the “ men of the trees ” in England, to repair the ravages of the war on the trees of England. Mrs W. Holmes read an extract from the writings of a Portuguese author, which narrated in vivid and beautiful style the value of trees and their intimate association through life —from the wooden cradle to the wooden coffin. A special table decorated with pink camellias was reserved in the dining room for those members of the original committee who were able to be present. Lady Ferguson, president, Mrs E. I. Halsted, and Miss Downie Stewart (original vice-presidents), and Miss Jean Burt and Miss Mary Ross. Members of the original committee not able to be present, and to whom messages were sent, were Lady Sargood, Mrs T. C. Ross, Mrs G. R. Ritchie, and Dr Siedeberg McKinnon.
