WATER SHORTAGE IN SYDNEY RESERVOIRS DANGEROUSLY LOW (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) SYDNEY. June 12. Once again the Metropolitan Water Board is faced with an acute water shortage. .All its reservoirs are at a dangerously low level, and water restrictions have been reimposed, and will shortly be further tightened throughout the metropolitan area. The board’s catchment area has experienced a prolonged under-average rainfall, and the position has been intensified by a substantial extension of sewerage mains and reticulations to new blocks of flats and residentials which since the war have been erected in all the suburbs at an unprecedented rate, largely, it is believed as a safe means of investment. The Commonwealth Government today announced drastic control of building operations with the object of diverting capital, skilled labour, and basic materials to the war effort. In future no buildings except dwellings costing less than £3OO can be erected without the Treasurer’s consent. Expenditure on alterations to existing buildings must not exceed £SOO.
